Elderly man dies while snorkeling off Key Largo

Charles Leidigh, 71, found face down, unresponsive in water

KEY LARGO, Fla. – A man visiting from Pennsylvania died while snorkeling off Key Largo on Wednesday, Monroe County sheriff's deputies said.

Charles Leidigh, 71, was on a group snorkeling trip to Dry Rocks Reef when the captain of the vessel told deputies he noticed Leidigh was face down in the water and not moving.

The first mate pulled Leidigh onto the boat around 4 p.m. and began performing CPR. The rest of the snorkelers were called back onto the boat and they returned to shore.

Paramedics pronounced Leidigh dead once he was brought to land. Deputies said Leidigh was snorkeling with his wife and grandson.

An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of death.
