2 families displaced after Miami house fire

18-year-old man questioned by police

MIAMI – A family of eight and another family were displaced from their homes after a fire broke out Monday morning. According to police, an 18-year-old man who lives there is being questioned about the cause of the blaze.

The fire was reported just before 8 a.m. at a two-story apartment building at 1287 NW 59 St. in Miami.

Firefighters said flames could be seen coming through the windows of the home when they arrived.

Part of the building also had hurricane shutters and bars which made it difficult for some of the residents to get out of their home, and for fire rescue to get inside.

Authorities said there were five adults, three children and a dog inside the apartment where the fire broke out in.

No injuries were reported.

Family members say the 18-year-old man being questioned by police has a history of mental health issues.

The Red Cross is assisting both families until their home is deemed safe to live in again.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but neighbors told Local 10 News they believe a mattress was set on fire.
