Roy Blanco's stabbing death could be accidental, detectives say

Officers struggled with Blanco, saw knife protruding from stomach

BIG COPPITT KEY, Fla. – Friends and family of Tanya Gonzalez gathered Friday to remember the young woman after her decomposing body was found in the trunk of her car, allegedly killed at the hands of her ex-boyfriend.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office released new details regarding the capture and death of Roy Blanco, the man accused of killing Gonzalez.

The 911 call and radio traffic calls have also been released from Tuesday's discovery of Roy Blanco, his mother and his dog in Big Coppitt Key.

According to detectives, the fatal stab wound to 33-year-old Blanco's abdomen may have been accidental.

No description found

Customs and Border Protection officers were the first to make contact with Blanco and his mother after a good Samaritan hopped on his bicycle and followed the mother and son, who he saw coming out of some bushes.

When officers arrived, Blanco was crouched on the ground, attempting to ingest pills. Officers knocked the pills out of his hand and kept him from swallowing any of the pills in his mouth. Detectives said the officers struggled with Blanco before taking him to the ground and placing him in handcuffs.

When officers lifted Blanco up, they saw a knife protruding from his stomach. Because of the struggle with officers and the fact that the officers said they didn't see Blanco stab himself, detectives believe it could have been an accident.

Detectives said Blanco's mother was successful at ingesting some of the pills, and remains at Lower Keys Medical Center.

Her condition has not been released at this time. The dog was taken by Animal Services.
