5th sexual assault reported on FIU's main campus since June

Police: Man on bike grabs 2 student's buttocks at Modesto Maidique Campus

MIAMI – Two female students were sexually assaulted by an unidentified man riding on a bicycle at Florida International University's Modesto Maidique Campus over the weekend, according to FIU police.

This is the fifth incident where a man on a bike has grabbed a student's buttocks on campus since June.

"It's a violation of privacy -- you know, you can't be sexually harassing people," said FIU student, Matthew William.

The most recent incidents occurred on Saturday at about 8:30 p.m. and Sunday at about 9 p.m.

The first incident occurred June 24 at about 10 p.m., with the following two occurring on a night in August and the night of Sept. 2.

Police said it is unclear whether the incidents are related, but all of the victims have described the attacker as a thin, white male on a bicycle.

FIU Police Chief Alexander Casas told Local 10 News reporter Hatzel Vela that officers are taking the allegations very seriously.

"I think some of the victims didn't take it very seriously when it occurred," said Casas. "They just figure --'It's a prank, somebody slapped me on the butt, no big deal' -- but here, we don't take anything lightly."

Anyone with information about any of these cases is asked to call FIU police at 305-348-2626.
