Miami Lakes to honor breast cancer patient

With pink lighting, a proclamation and guest of honor, council shows solidarity

MIAMI LAKES, Fla. – Miami Lakes Mayor Wayne Slaton turned Town Hall pink for the month of October.

Slaton said the disease has affected many of the residents of Miami Lakes. He has also allowed American Cancer Society donation cans to be spread around government property.

Miami Lakes spokeswoman Nicole Lesson thanked  Local 10 News for telling a story about Miami Lakes resident named Mercy Moore. The mother of two boys, is living with an advanced form of breast cancer that has moved to her spine.

"We wanted to make sure she knew that we were here to support her," Lesson said. "She is a very courageous woman."

At 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, at Town Hall, 6601 Main St., Slaton and councilmen will be presenting a proclamation in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Moore will be their guest of honor.

"Miami Lakes has lost too many residents to breast cancer," Councilman Nelson Rodriguez said.
