FWC investigating suspicious alligator death

Carcass of alligator found in water near boat ramp

MARATHON, Fla. – The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is investigating the suspicious death of an alligator found in Monroe County last week.

FWC officers found the 6.5 foot long alligator in the water off a boat ramp near the Seven-Mile Bridge on October 29.

Officials say that evidence at the scene leads them to believe that a vehicle had backed up on the ramp and dumped the alligator's carcass into the water.

According to the FWC, the American alligator is federally protected and can only be legally taken by individuals with proper licenses and permits.

The FWC asks anyone who has information regarding the death of this alligator to call the FWC at 888-404-FWCC (3922).
