South Fla. mother prepares for quadruplets to come home

Ivanna Gutierrez has 4 times as much to plan for after birth of 'miracles'

MIAMI – Tucking sheets, fluffing pillows, organizing and smiling like only a new mother can, Ivanna Gutierrez has four times as much to plan for.

"When we listened to the heartbeat, the doctor said you have one, two, three," recalled Gutierrez about what her doctor told her and her husband, David. "At the end, 'Oh and there's a fourth.'"

The Gutierrez family naturally conceived fraternal quadruplets without the use of fertility drugs. Her doctors said it only happens once every 700,000 pregnancies.

Ivanna Gutierrez said she was 27 weeks into her pregnancy when doctors told her Gabriel wasn't getting enough nutrients and was at risk of dying. So she and her husband decided to deliver all of the babies on Aug. 18, three months before their expected due date.

Julian was born first, followed by Sebastian, Francesca and Gabriel.

Francesca, the only girl of the brood, will be the first released from the hospital Wednesday. Sebastian will follow a few weeks later.

All four are doing well but are still in the neonatal intensive care unit at Miami's Holtz Children's Hospital.

Ivanna Gutierrez said she prays to God every day for her "miracles."

"It's been a blessing," she said.

She's planning every detail four times over, welcoming those last moments of quiet for this family anxious to have more than pillows in the babies' room.

The children's father, David Guiterrez said he is a chef who had big plans to open a restaurant before the babies were born. But, understandably, those plans are now on hold.

Meanwhile, the family has moved into a new apartment closer to the hospital as a precaution.
