NASCAR driver gives Boy Scout ride to Homestead school

Scott Lagasse Jr. drives Caleb Sowinski to school in race car

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – A South Florida boy got a ride to school from a NASCAR driver Thursday morning.

Scott Lagasse Jr. wasn't speeding when he took Caleb Sowinski to Air Base K-8 Center for International Education in Homestead, despite what Sowinski might have wished.

"I think I'm going to go 1,000 mph," the 7-year-old Cub Scout told Local 10 News.

Sowinski arrived in style thanks to NASCAR's partnership with the Boy Scouts of America.

For Lagasse, who was once a Boy Scout, driving Sowinski to school was an honor.

"I believe heavily in it," he said. "And so to spend a few hours and do something fun with it is not a hard decision to make at all."

The second-grade student was the envy of his classmates. Even Lagasse's father was jealous.

"Actually meeting an actual race car driver and him getting a ride to school, that's pretty awesome," Sgt. Greg Sowinski said.

The final race in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will be decided Sunday at the Homestead-Miami Speedway.
