CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Three suspected burglars are in custody following a three-vehicle crash in Coral Gables.
Police say the burglaries occurred at two homes, one in the 300 block of Manor Place and another in the 500 block of Loretto Avenue.
Officers say the men were traveling in a silver car when they crashed into two other vehicles on Bird Road at Granada Avenue.
Police say the suspects fled from their car, and two jumped into a nearby canal. According to officers, one of the men made it across before he was captured, while the other was caught as he was still attempting to swim across the water.
Police say the third man was hiding, and was found and bitten by a police K-9. He was also injured in the crash.
Police confirm that the driver of the white Volkswagen was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center with unknown injuries. The driver of the black car was not injured.
According to several Local 10 viewers, the victim, who they identified as Peter Blanco, is listed in serious condition. They say he is the father to a 5-year-old child and has a baby on the way.
Blanco's family members told Local 10 News reporter Andrew Perez that Blanco's injuries are severe, but he is expected to live.
Police have not released the identity of the suspects, but say they are three black men who are believed to have been involved in other recent burglaries in the area.
