MIAMI – Bottles of liquor and weapons are just some of the items seized by security at airports. At Miami International Airport, security screenings stop items like those from boarding along with you.
Local 10 got a look at the items stopped before they got on flights. Surprisingly, there are enough weapons to supply a small army.
"In 12 months we've collected almost 80,000 pounds of items," said Sari Koshetz, with Transportation Security Administration.
From the odd to the even more strange category, TSA officers at MIA have seen and collected it all from airline passengers.
"We find jagged knives, grenades, starter pistols, real guns, all kinds of items that are prohibited in the cabin of the aircraft," Koshetz said.
The most basic things that people try to get through security checkpoints are bottles of water, but they also have other prohibited items, like replicas, including a bullet-shaped propane lighter and TNT explosives, which is really nothing more than perfume.
Just last week a fully loaded pistol was found in a carry-on bag at Fort-Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport -- the second this month.
Miami is among the top in the nation for weapons confiscated. Now, the TSA is reminding passengers to scour their luggage before packing for the upcoming busy travel season so you won't become a statistic like one passenger who showed up with an odd object in his carry-on.
"A fully gassed chainsaw was brought to the checkpoint," Koshetz said. 'First of all, you can't have gasoline in the belly of the plane or in the airplane, but to bring a fully gassed chainsaw into the plane would've caused quite a stir, and not a pleasant one."
