Jan Mann Opportunity School placed on lockdown after gun found

Student arrested after gun seized

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – A Miami Gardens school was placed on lockdown Wednesday after a gun was found on campus.

Miami-Dade schools police said a student was taken into custody after they received a tip that he brought a gun to the Jan Mann Opportunity School.

After officers confronted the boy, he became belligerent and uncooperative, police said.

Once the gun was seized and the student was arrested, he made threats that there were more guns on school property, police said.

The school was placed on lockdown for more than an hour as police and K-9 officers searched the campus for any other weapons, but none were found. The lockdown was lifted about 1 p.m.

"I guess the kid threw the pistol in the garbage, but they found the pistol," student Laterence Troutman told Local 10 News.

About 75 students were detained and searched by police after the threat was made.

Giancarlo Gamboa said 15 to 20 officers stormed the cafeteria with their guns drawn, ordering students not to move their hands.

"That's why they need see-through bags (and a) metal detector," parent Isaiah Bullard told Local 10.
