Airboat overturns in Everglades, sends 4 people into water

No injuries reported after boat strikes submerged rock

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Four people were not hurt late Wednesday afternoon when the airboat they were on overturned, sending them into the water.

Two men and two women were about 6 1/2 miles southwest of Everglades Holiday Park in the Miami Canal when they rounded a turn and struck a submerged rock, causing the 14-foot-long airboat to tilt up and flip over, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The four managed to swim to the shore and call for help.

BSO Air Rescue arrived at the scene and guided BSO Fire Rescue crews to the stranded, soaking wet boaters. Deputies said firefighters marked the overturned airboat a navigational hazard and brought the four people back to Holiday Park.

No injuries were reported. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission also arrived at the scene.
