MIAMI ā An inmate caused havoc at the Richard E. Gerstein Justice Building in Miami after he broke a sprinkler which flooded courtrooms and forced evacautions.
Acacio Carreira was in a fourth-floor holding cell at the building, 1351 NW 12th St., when he somehow broke one of the sprinklers.
Water from the broken sprinkler then flowed to the floor below, which houses courtrooms and additional holding cells.
"The smell in courtroom four and five was really pretty bad," Judge Nushin Sayfie said.
In all, seven courtrooms were shut down and evacuations were ordered while crews could clean up the mess. All courtrooms are expected to reopen for normal business Thursday.
Carreira, 32, was originally booked on burglary and grand theft charges Dec. 16. He will now face additional charges of tampering with fire equipment.
