FHP says car stopped on highway when pickup truck slammed into it

Steven Hoyos, 17, of Margate, was killed in this crash on Interstate 95 in Delray Beach early Sunday morning.

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. – A Margate teenager was killed in a crash early Sunday morning on Interstate 95 in Delray Beach.

Steven Hoyos, 17, was pronounced dead at Delray Medical Center after a pickup truck slammed into his car in the southbound lanes of I-95 near the Atlantic Avenue exit about 4:45 a.m.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Hoyos' car was stopped on the highway when the pickup truck slammed into it from behind.

Steven Komec, 16, of Margate, was a passenger in the car. He was taken to Delray Medical Center in critical condition.

The driver of the pickup truck wasn't injured.

According to the FHP report, the car had front-end damage that may have caused it to become disabled.

It was not immediately known what caused the damage to the front of the car.

The crash remains under investigation.
