Police investigate possible accidental shooting in Miami

Teen taken to JMH's Ryder Trauma Center

MIAMI ā€“ Miami police are investigating a possible accidental shooting that injured a 14-year-old boy along Northwest 77th Street.

Relatives of the teen, who has been identified as Dontavis Young, said he was supposed to go straight home after school but instead stopped to hang out with a group of friends in his neighborhood.

Relatives and police believe someone in the group may have been playing with a gun. Police said the teen was shot in the arm.

"Just stop," pleaded with teen's mother, Cassandra Young, as she waited for word on her son's condition. "Just put them down. You're hurting each other for no reason. Just put them down."

The teen's brother was also present with the incident occurred, according to his family.

Police said they had not recovered the weapon as of late Wednesday night, adding that the young witnesses would also not talk about the incident.

The teen was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he is expected to survive his injuries.

No charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
