Woman killed in Opa-locka house fire

Disabled woman trapped in home during fire

OPA-LOCKA, Fla. – An elderly woman was killed in a Thursday morning house fire in Opa-locka.

The fire started just before 9 a.m. at 2060 York St.

City spokesman David Chiverton told Local 10 News the disabled and bedridden woman was trapped inside the home.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesman Alexio Rodriguez Jr. said there was nothing to indicate the fire was suspicious.

"We are conducting our investigation to determine the cause," he said.

The Rev. David Lennon, a family friend, told Local 10 he was at the home last week praying with the victim.

"She cared about her neighborhood," he said. "She cared about each and every one (who) passed up and down this street."

Lennon said the victim was in her late 80s and lived with her son, who was not home at the time.
