Rooftop robbers linked to similar crimes in Broward County

Crooks enter through roof, wait for employees to arrive

DANIA BEACH, Fla. – Broward Sheriff's Office detectives believe the same men are responsible for more than half a dozen check-cashing store robberies in which the crooks get inside through the roof.

The most recent robbery occurred at an Advance America store in Boca Raton three weeks ago.

BSO spokeswoman Gina Carter said investigators believe the crooks have also been targeting check-cashing stores in Broward County.

"These men are dangerous. They're armed," Carter said. "They have no problem using force to get what they want."

The men are believed to gain access to the stores through the roof while the businesses are closed and then wait for employees to arrive for work in the morning.

"What they want is for the employees to open the safe and have access to the money," Carter said.

Carter said the crooks have struck stores in Sunrise, Lauderhill, Oakland Park, Tamarac, Dania Beach and North Lauderdale since September.

"They're planning this out. They're looking for their targets," Carter said. "They have the tools and the skills needed to get into the business. These men know what they're doing."

Although nobody has been seriously hurt in any of the robberies, deputies are hoping someone will recognize the men before they strike again.

"We are hoping that somebody out there will see them and recognize them in any case," Carter said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
