Gunman in west Miami-Dade County salon shooting played pro baseball

Serguey Linares, accused of shooting girlfriend, pitched for Pittsburgh Pirates minor league team

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. ā€“ Miami-Dade police have released the identity of a gunman who stormed into a beauty salon in west Miami-Dade County during the weekend and started shooting.

Police said Serguey Linares shot his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself. Customers and employees inside Salonz Beauty Suites were forced to hit the floor and take cover as shots were fired.

Local 10 News stopped by the salon Monday afternoon, but the property manager didn't want to comment on what happened. She said the victim's family has asked for privacy and the shooting was a tragic, isolated incident.

"We don't know about anyone's personal life. We're just landlords," she said, but declined to give her name.

Linares died at the scene while the victim was taken to a hospital. Linares was a former minor league baseball player for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He pitched for two years and left the team in 2008.

Local 10Ā stopped by his home and, although someone was looking out the window, no one answered the door.

A neighbor said that he believes Linares was renting a room in the home.Ā

"He was a very quiet guy," Roberto Garcia said. "Every time we saw each other, he would say hello and he was fine."

Many questions remain as to why Linares shot his girlfriend in the first place. Police are still investigating.Ā

"It makes no sense," Garcia said. "They were quiet. They were nice. Other than that, I have no idea what happened between them."Ā

As for the victim, police are not releasing her identity. She was taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center and remains in critical condition.
