Police cruiser found riddled with bullets in Cutler Bay

Stray bullet strikes bedroom window of nearby home

CUTLER BAY, Fla. – Miami-Dade police are investigating after someone shot into a patrol car parked outside a home in Cutler Bay.

A homeowner called 911 shortly before 2 a.m. Wednesday after hearing multiple gunshots near Gulfstream and Marlin roads.

When police arrived, they found multiple bullet holes in the car.

The police cruiser was used as a decoy to deter drivers from speeding in the area and was unoccupied at the time of the shooting.

Investigators said one of the bullets struck a home.

Tasha Johnson told Local 10 News that she was thankful that her brother wasn't home at the time.

On any other night, he would have been in the direct path of a stray bullet that traveled through her front gate before striking his bedroom window. Instead, he spent the night at his girlfriend's house. It was a decision that may have saved his life.

"If he was standing up that time of morning, he would've (gotten) hurt," Johnson said. "He would've (gotten) hit, probably in the head."

The shooting came two weeks after another police cruiser was shot outside an officer's home near Southwest 104th Avenue and Southwest 181st Street.

Detectives are trying to determine if the shootings are connected.
