FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Police are searching for the gunman who shot and killed a man, who was being shown a home in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday.
The Broward Sheriff's Office identified the victim as Kenol Jean, 51, of Pompano Beach. Jean and his wife were with a real estate agent, looking at a newly renovated home on Northwest 6th Court when he was shot and killed.
The incident is now causing a scare in the real estate world. Jeff Dillard and Chip Rowand with Keller/Williams said agents have been calling non-stop, worried for their own safety.
"We want to teach them not to be a target. Not to make themselves an easy push over or an easy target to come after," said Dillard.
Dillard and Rowand will be offering a safety course for agents across South Florida. The course will offer agents, and their clients, tips on how to protect themselves. The course will also offer concealed weapons training.
"We're going to teach them how to be aware of their surroundings," said Dillard. "If someone grabs a hold of them what do they do, how to make sure someone knows where they are, who they're with."
BSO says the motive behind the shooting was robbery. Witnesses say the gunman stole Jean's gold chain.
"He snapped his gold chain from his neck, then shot him four times is what I heard," said Earl Sims, who lives in the neighborhood.
Two houses down from where this happened, surveillance cameras captured an image of the suspect. BSO said the suspect is considered armed and dangerous.
Surveillance video shows the suspect talking to someone in a white Pontiac before the shooting. BSO said the suspect is in his mid to late 50s, with salt and pepper hair and beard.
"I hope it is an isolated incident. It sounds like it, but it is happening throughout the country," said Rowand.
The classes will be offered in the next coming weeks and will be open to all real estate agents in South Florida.
In the meantime, BSO is asking for the public's help. Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
