MIAMI BEACH, Fla. ā An 18-year-old man from New York who was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run crash that injured a Miami Beach police officer over the weekend was denied bond on Monday.
According to an arrest report, Meshach Samuels told Officer Eduard Alba that he did not have a driver's license on him when he was pulled over on Saturday, but said he had a New York State ID card.
"There was some sort of tandem racing going on," Miami Beach police Chief Daniel Oates said.
Police said Alba instructed Samuels and a BMW to pull off of Ocean Drive near Seventh Street about 10:40 p.m. Samuels then hopped the sidewalk as Alba gave him loud commands to stop his vehicle, police said.
According to the report, Alba reached into Samuels' Mercedes-Benz and grabbed his left arm in an attempt to stop him from driving off.
Police said Samuels sped away, dragging Alba about a half-block and leaving him unconscious on the side of the road.
"Officer Alba suffered a serious concussion -- that he blacked out from somewhere between five or 10 minutes," Oates said.
Surveillance video shows the Mercedes speeding south on Collins Avenue between Sixth and Seventh streets.
Police said they found the Mercedes and Samuels at a La Quinta hotel in Fort Lauderdale. Samuels, who is from Brooklyn, was arrested and charged with attempted premeditated murder and leaving the scene of a crash with injuries.
Alba, who has been with the department seven years, also suffered road rash. He was taken to the hospital Saturday night and was released Sunday afternoon.
