Hialeah hit-and-run suspect held in jail on $26,000 bond

66-year-old woman killed in Saturday evening crash

HIALEAH, Fla. – A man accused in a hit-and-run crash in Hialeah that killed a 66-year-old woman was ordered to be held in jail on a $26,000 bond Monday.

The crash happened at 6:20 p.m. Saturday at West Second Avenue and 20th Street.

A Miami-Dade County judge also ordered Ernesto Izquierdo Gonzalez, 25, not to drive, and stipulated that he be placed on house arrest following his release.

Police said Gonzalez was driving a white Nissan when he ran a stop sign and crashed into an SUV carrying Amelia Caridad Diaz and five others.

Miguel Gutierrez, who was driving the SUV, said Gonzalez never stepped on the brakes. Police said the impact was so strong that it flipped the SUV, launching Diaz from the vehicle and killing her.

Police said Gonzalez walked away from the scene, but witnesses followed him as he went to a store a couple of blocks away from the scene.

"They informed police where he was," Hialeah police spokesman Carl Zogby said.

After initially resisting, Gonzales was caught and arrested, police said.

Gonzalez faces multiple charges, including resisting an officer without violence and driving with a suspended license.
