Royal Treatz owner holds contest to give dessert shop away

Applicants need only submit $100 entry fee, write essay

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – The owner of a Pembroke Pines dessert shop has a sweet deal for someone looking to own a business. She's giving hers away.

Royal Treatz has been a part of the South Florida community for almost four years, and owner Lisa McCann wants it to stay that way, just under new ownership.

It was her dream to open the shop, but because of health concerns and other factors, she can no longer remain its owner. So now she's hoping to pass it on to the next generation of entrepreneurs.

"I want it to be their dream too, and that's why I didn't want to just give it to anybody," McCann said. "That's why I wanted to give it to the person or persons that I think, you know, I can make someone else's dream come true."

Instead of putting it up for sale, she's giving it away as part of a contest. Prospective owners are asked to submit a $100 entry fee, along with an essay describing why he or she wants to own Royal Treatz.

It's an unconventional way to pass on a business, but McCann is confident this is the way to go -- both in her heart and her bank account.

"I've put almost a half-million dollars into the place, and I have to have something to retire on," McCann said. "So at a $100 entry fee, 500 applicants is $50,000. The tangible property alone is worth more than $50,000."

The winner won't be announced for several months, so it gives McCann plenty of time to review all the applicants.
