First floor evacuated as gas line repaired
MIAMI – South Miami Hospital evacuated its first floor Tuesday afternoon after construction crews hit a gas line that supplies the hospital, South Miami spokeswoman Dori Robau Alvarez said.
According to Alvarez, crews were working on the loading dock area at the hospital when they struck the gas line about 3:30 p.m.
The gas flow was shut off and repairs were made.
Firefighters checked the building and said no gas was detected.
Visitors were allowed back in the hospital and all surrounding streets were reopened shortly after 7 p.m.
Alvarez said all scheduled surgeries and procedures were canceled for the remainder of the day.
