Man hurt in armed carjacking, shooting at Miami-Dade County convenience store

Police: Gunman took victim's keys from pocket, fled west on NW 167th Street

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A man is in critical condition after an armed carjacking and shooting at a Miami-Dade County convenience store, police said.

It happened at 1 p.m. Saturday at 16800 Northwest 47th Ave.

Detectives said the victim, identified by his sisters as Robert Nunez, pulled into the store in a 2001 to 2004 two-door light blue BMW convertible with a blue convertible top with Florida license tag CVWA13.

The gunman was standing outside of the store when Nunez parked and exchanged words with Nunez, police said.

The gunman then produced a firearm and shot Nunez, who attempted to flee on foot but collapsed a few feet away, according to Miami-Dade police.

Nunez was seen on surveillance video rushing into the store and falling to the ground. A witness also seen in the video said he called police.

"The first thing I did was grab my phone and call 911," the witness said. "I saw the guy who shot him."

Manuel, the store clerk, said he called, too. He said he knows the victim well.

"He said, kept saying, 'Call rescue, rescue,'" Manuel said. "We saw that he got a gunshot from the left side of his stomach, and it came out the right side."

Authorities said the gunman took Nunez's car keys from his pocket and fled in Nunez's vehicle west on Northwest 167th Street.

Robert Nunez.

Nunez was taken to Ryder Trauma at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.

Nunez is a father of four kids who drove trucks and enjoyed fixing up cars in his spare time.

"He's a very nice guy, low key, very calm, always at home," said Cristina Urena. "Thank God my brother is not dead, but he could have killed him for nothing, for a car?"

The gunman is described by police as a black man who is 22 to 25 years old with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a Skully, white shirt and black pants.

Police are hoping surveillance video and help from the public can help them find the shooter and the car he used to get away.

"I just hope that the police find who it was," said Judy Nunez.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers of Miami-Dade at 305-471-TIPS.
