2 children stranded on island rescued in southwest Miami-Dade County

Island located in large residential lake off Southwest 72nd Avenue

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. ā€“ At least two children were rescued in southwest Miami-Dade County after authorities were notified they had become stranded on an island.

Dr. Tim McGuinness, who runs DroneCyclone.com, was in the neighborhood and saw the rescue helicopter. He pulled out his cellphone and started recording the ordeal.

"They (the children) looked slightly traumatized," he told Local 10 News. "They looked tired. They looked fatigued."

McGuinness said officers ran toward the lake as a helicopter and diver rushed closer to the scene.

The island is located in a large residential lake off Southwest 72nd Avenue. Residents told Local 10 News they noticed the children stranded on the island, and they could not swim all the way back to land.

It remains unclear whether the children swam to the island and became tired, or if another person on a kayak dropped them off.

After pulling the victims out and moving them to land, police were seen escorting two young children in swimsuits and towels to a home in the area.

Miami-Dade police are expected to release more details.
