KEY WEST, Fla. – A man who was found dead on a sailboat off Key West last week has been tentatively identified as Jason Atkins.
The 39-year-old man's body was found by a friend of Atkins on Thursday after he heard a pit bull on the boat barking.
The man took the dog with him and called the U.S. Coast Guard.
Monroe County sheriff's deputies said Atkins' body was badly decomposed. He was last seen alive June 6.
A syringe was found near the body with a liquid substance inside, and the man's hand was found outside on the deck. Detectives said it appears the dog may have pulled the hand off the body after Atkins died, due to bite marks on the hand.
An initial examination of the body and autopsy did not indicate that there were any signs of foul play involved in the death.
