DORAL, Fla. – A man accused of shooting at Miami-Dade police officers has been taken into custody.

Miami-Dade police said Jonathan Gilbert, 19, surrendered Monday night.

Gilbert was identified last week as the suspect believed to have shot at two officers in the area of Northwest 71st Street and 16th Avenue. Police said he fired shots when officers tried to approach him while on patrol in the area, which is known for drug trafficking.

The officers drove to safety while Gilbert continued to shoot at their vehicle, police said. He escaped in an older-model Chevrolet Impala with two other men. Investigators are still trying to determine the identities of the others.

Gilbert is expected to be charged with attempted first-degree murder in the shooting. He has previously been arrested on charges of cocaine possession and battery.
