MIAMI – Family members of a 10-year-old boy who was shot while riding his bicycle outside a community center in Miami's Liberty City earlier this month said they are relieved that an arrest has finally been made.
The family said Alfonso Rivera, 33, was arrested in connection with the shooting after someone came forward to police.
Rivera faces a charge of attempted second-degree murder.
"I don't hate no one, but, (he's) a kid, you know, and I just appreciate whoever came forward," Jamari Tillman's grandmother, Sandra Fair, told Local 10 News.
Jamari, who was released from Holtz Children's Hospital on June 7, is now in therapy for his injuries. He uses a walker to get around but is otherwise doing just fine.
Jamari was shot in the leg while riding his bike near the basketball courts at the Liberty Square Community Center.
From the beginning, it was clear to police that Jamari was not the intended target.
It's unclear if police are still looking for anyone else believed to be involved in the shooting.
Jamari told Local 10 News that he made a sign to let people know that kids are playing in the area, and he hangs it outside his home or wherever kids have gathered.
