MIAMI – Newly released surveillance video shows a man accused of shooting a neighbor on Fahter's Day having altercations with multiple neighbors in recent years.
Miami-Dade police released the video Wednesday, which shows Omar Rodriguez, 66, stopping a car in the street to confront the driver, and swearing in Spanish at another neighbor.
Police said residents began filming Rodriguez's interactions after several altercations, which brought police to the Kendall neighborhood 90 times in the past five years.
"Sometimes he would just stand out there and just stare at people to try to intimidate them," a woman who lives in the neighborhood told Local 10 News.
In the latest incident, police said Rodriguez shot Jose Rey because the victim's dog was trying to defecate in his son's yard.
Police said Rodriguez admitted to getting into an argument about the dog defecating. He told officers that Rey was walking his dog when Rey told Rodriguez that "he would be returning to fight him." Rodriguez said he took off his shirt and challenged Rey "to fight him now," but Rey ignored him and walked home.
Later in the day, Rodriguez was waiting for Rey at a neighborhood gathering, where the two exchanged words, police said.
According to an arrest report, Rodriguez then walked outside, went to his car, pulled a gun out of his glove compartment and shot Rey.
A neighbor told police that he saw Rodriguez fire two shots at Rey. As he called police, the neighbor "(believed) he heard more shots being fired."
Rey underwent surgery this week at Kendall Regional Medical Center.
A Miami-Dade County judge ordered Rodriguez to remain in jail on no bond Tuesday.
