Man, 64, struck by SUV while riding bicycle in Miramar

Woman driving SUV says bicyclist ran red light

MIRAMAR, Fla. – A 64-year-old man was flown to a hospital Thursday morning after he was struck by a sport utility vehicle while riding his bicycle in Miramar.

Police said an Acura SUV traveling south on Southwest 184th Avenue struck the bicyclist, who was headed west on Miramar Parkway.

The man was airlifted to Memorial Regional Hospital with serious injuries.

A shoe and a fanny pack lay in the street near where he was struck. The impact also mangled the mountain bike that the man was riding.

Marlene Weithers, who was driving the SUV, told Local 10 News that the bicyclist came out of nowhere and ran a red light.

"I was at a green light and I was crossing over and when I saw him and braked, he was already (on) top of me," she said.

Weithers said the bicyclist appeared to be "badly hurt."
