Man shot by Plantation police officer dies at hospital

Police say man punched officer in face behind Doctors Plus Professional Center

PLANTATION, Fla. – A man who was shot by a Plantation police officer during a confrontation behind an office building Sunday night has died.

Local 10 News learned Monday that the man died at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale after undergoing surgery.

Detective Philip Toman said the officer, identified Monday as Erik Carlton, was on routine patrol when he spotted the man behind the Doctors Plus Professional Center and asked him to leave.

"For reasons that we don't know yet, the subject attacked the police officer," Toman said. "He punched him in the face."

Toman said Carlton first deployed his Taser, but it was ineffective. At that point, the officer shot the man. Toman didn't say how many times the man was shot.

Carlton was treated for his injury at Westside Regional Medical Center and released. He was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the shooting investigation.

Toman said the man who was killed has an extensive arrest record that includes acts of violence towards law enforcement officers.
