Unresponsive baby rescued off Sands Cut by FWC officers

10-month-old Ryan doing well after apparently choking on mucus

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A 10-month-old baby was rescued over the weekend by Florida Fish and Wildlife officers who were patrolling Sands Cut.

The parents of Ryan Escalante told Local 10 News reporter Carlos Suarez that Ryan was battling a virus and appeared to have choked on mucus.

The baby stopped breathing and the parents flagged down two officers in the area who performed CPR on Ryan until they got back to Black Point Marina, where the baby regained consciousness.

"As I made my way over, we realized they were frantically waving at us," Officer Roberto Rodriguez said. "The baby was unresponsive. His head was slanted to the side. He looked pale and his lips were turning blue."

Rodriguez and  investigator Rene Taboas performed CPR until the baby began coughing and breathing on his own.

"It was a rough day," Taboas said. "It was about 20 to 25 knots and it was pretty windy. It was a rough ride."

Ryan was treated at Baptist Hospital, where Taboas and Rodriguez visited him and is doing fine.

"It was nice to see the baby doing well," Taboas said.

Karen Escalante said she's thankful that the officers were there to help save her son.

"I have no words to express how truly grateful I am," she told Local 10 News.
