Teen shot, killed in Miami on Labor Day

Unclear if police still searching for shooter

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed on Labor Day in Miami-Dade County, police confirmed.

According to Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the teen, identified by family members as Maurice Harris Jr., had just started school at Miami Northwestern Senior High School, where he was a junior.

Police said Harris was shot multiple times while standing outside a home in the area of Northwest 54th Street and 13th Avenue. He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"This is really hurting the family," the victim's cousin, Arnica Perez, said. "No words can express the feeling."

Family members said Harris' father, Maurice Harris Sr., was shot and killed in 2013 while trying to protect his family during a home invasion.

They said the teen's mother moved her family to Orange County to keep her family safe. Because of personal circumstances, she had to move back to Miami over the summer.

"His mother is very distraught,"Harris' grandmother, Annie Streeter, said. "She had been through this three years ago with her husband."

Miami-Dade County Public Schools superintendent Alberto Carvalho took to Twitter on Monday morning.

"Sadly, not everyone of our kids gets to see today's rising sun. Overnight murderous violence has claimed one more child in our 'Magic City?'" Carvalho posted.

A motive for the shooting remains unclear.
