Dolphins make coaching changes on offense

Longtime NFL veteran Saunders brought on as offensive assistant

DAVIE, Fla. ā€“ The Miami Dolphins and interim head coach Dan Campbell have called in the cavalry to help turn around the team's offensive woes.

Stuck with the 25th ranked offense in the NFL through 4 games, the team announced that longtime coaching veteran Al Saunders has been brought aboard as senior offensive assistant.

Saunders, who has over 40 years of coaching experience, most recently served as a Raiders senior offensive assistant from 2012-14.

During his career, Saunders has coached 15 playoff teams, and won five division titles and a Super Bowl with the St. Louis Rams in 1999.

Saunders will be tasked with helping offensive coordinator Bill Lazor create firepower on a unit that has struggled to score in its last 3 games.

At 1-3, the Dolphins have gotten off to poor starts in each of the team's losses and rank 30th overall in scoring by averaging just 16.2 points per game.

Campbell was named interim head coach on Monday after Miami fired head coach Joe Philbin. The move came following a disastrous loss to the Jets in London; the team's third straight loss since a shaky season opening win vs. Washington.

The Dolphins also announced that Ben Johnson, the team's assistant quarterbacks coach, will take over for Campbell as tight ends coach, and Mike O'Keefe will transition from wide receivers coach to senior offensive assistant.
