100 people evacuated in Fort Lauderdale because of gas leak

Construction crew hits gas line 6 feet underground

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – About 100 people were evacuated in Fort Lauderdale Thursday because of a gas leak in the area.

The leak was reported at 632 S. Federal Highway.

Fire Rescue officials said a construction crew was drilling in the area and struck a natural gas line that was 6 feet underground.

A backhoe was brought in to help firefighters cap the leak.

Northbound traffic on Federal Highway is closed at Southeast Seventh Street. Southbound traffic is not affected, but authorities are asking people to avoid the area until repairs are completed.
