Handcuffed man who escaped from West Miami police custody caught

Police say suspect tried to swim across canal

MIAMI – A handcuffed man who escaped from police Wednesday afternoon was taken into custody.

A West Miami police officer told Local 10 News reporter Amy Viteri that a man in their custody escaped while he was in handcuffs.

The officer said she didn't know why the man was in custody or how he got away.

A police perimeter was established near Northwest 36th Street and Northwest 72nd Avenue.

Miami-Dade police spokeswoman Jennifer Capote said the suspect was eventually caught as he tried to swim across a canal near Northwest 73rd Avenue and Northwest 35th Street.

Police did not release the man's identity.
