Bus crashes into store in downtown Miami

Miami-Dade Transit bus swerves to avoid colliding with car

MIAMI – A Miami-Dade Transit bus crashed into a store Thursday night in downtown Miami.

The bus was trying to avoid colliding with a red car and ended up crashing into a store at North Miami Avenue and Northwest First Street, police said.

Two people were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Witnesses said the bus was traveling south on North Miami Avenue and the red car was heading west on Northwest First Street. Passengers said the bus swerved into the building to avoid a collision.

The store fronts of two jewelry shops are in shambles. A person who was on the bus said there were three passengers and the driver on board at the time of the crash.

An engineer had to come out to see if the building is structurally safe to remove the bus.

"It's amazing that more people weren't involved," Miami Department of Fire-Rescue Assistant Chief Pete Gomez said. This same scenario plays out at 12 o'clock, 1 o'clock in the afternoon, you're talking about a totally different response."
