Suspect shoots carjacking victim in Weston, deputies say

Woman, son carjacked in elementary school parking lot

WESTON, Fla. – A woman and her son were carjacked by a man who forced the duo to drive him to a destination before shooting the woman's son, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

BSO spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright said the woman was teaching her college-aged son how to drive a stick shift in the parking lot of Gator Run Elementary School when Jorge Almeida held them at gunpoint and forced them to drive him to a rest area on U.S. Highway 27 near mile marker 39.

While at the rest area, Almeida began questioning the woman about her finances and at some point got into a struggle with the woman's son, shooting him in the leg, Coleman-Wright said.

A witness went to help the woman and her son and was able to detain Almeida until deputies arrived, Coleman-Wright said.

The gunshot victim was taken to Cleveland Clinic with non-life-threatening injuries.

Almeida is expected to face attempted murder, armed carjacking and armed kidnapping charges.
