Man accused of beating mother's boyfriend to death denied bond

Edward Cadet, 30, arrested on murder without premeditation charge

MARGATE, Fla. – A South Florida man accused of beating his mother's boyfriend to death in Margate has been ordered held in jail without bond.

Edward Cadet, 30, of Sunrise, was arrested Tuesday on one count of murder without premeditation.

Margate police said officers were called to an altercation between two men at a home in the Coral Bay community. Officers found Randy Pierson, 59, of Margate, severely injured, unconscious and without a pulse.

Pierson was taken to Broward Health North, where he was pronounced dead.

According to an arrest report, Cadet went to the home with his wife and 3-year-old child to collect his mother's belongings and speak to Pierson about his mother's recent death.

Detectives said Cadet became angry during the conversation and attacked Pierson, striking him multiple times and causing him to fall on the ground.

Police said Cadet continued striking Pierson while he was on the ground, then called 911.

"What's the reason for the ambulance?" a dispatcher asked Pierson.

"This guy ran into my fist," Pierson said.

"OK, like an assault?" the dispatcher asked.

"Just send somebody out," Pierson said.

According to the report, Cadet turned Pierson on his side so he would not choke on his blood, but he was already unconscious when officers arrived.

Cadet's mother, Alfonsene Valentine, 60, was found dead Sunday of a gunshot wound to the head in an open field in the Coral Bay community.

Police said it's unclear whether she committed suicide or was killed by someone else.
