MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A man is in custody after carjacking a woman Tuesday morning in northwest Miami-Dade County, police said.
According to detectives, the woman was carjacked at Northwest 87th Street and 24th Avenue.
A police officer patrolling the area nearby spotted the stolen car and attempted to pull the driver over.
Police said the suspect, whose identity has not been released, crashed into a street sign at Northwest 10th Avenue and 121st Street and then ran off.
"He was jumping gate, after gate, after gate, falling -- jumping gate after gate," a witness, Xavier, told Local 10 News. "He looked at me (and) I didn't know what he was running for and I closed the door."
SWAT and K-9 units were called out to help find the driver, who was found hiding in an abandoned home off 120th Street and Eighth Avenue.
Police said the man was armed with a gun.
"He had a book bag, I didn't see the gun," Xavier said. "It's good they got him off the street. He could have hurt somebody."
The woman was not injured during the carjacking, police said.
