14-year-old shot in Florida City

Teenager airlifted to Nicklaus Children's Hospital

FLORIDA CITY, Fla. – A 14-year-old was airlifted to Nicklaus Children's Hospital after a shooting Monday night in Florida City.

Martwan Santiago was shot three times in the 1300 block of Northwest Eighth Place about 7:10 p.m., Florida City police Officer Ken Armenteros said.

Armenteros said the teenager was a gang member.

Santiago remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.

Early Tuesday, Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho expressed his frustration with recent shootings on Twitter.

"Incomprehensible that on the day we celebrate peace and courage, cowardly violence strikes again with the shooting of a 14-year-old child," Carvalho said.

Armenteros said police "are working some strong leads" but have not yet made any arrests.

He said Santiago will be questioned by detectives once he recovers from his injuries.
