Coral Springs man accused of beating elderly mother

Scott Long, 56, accused of punching mother, pulling her hair, twisting neck

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – A man from Coral Springs was arrested Tuesday on allegations that he has been severely beating his elderly mother over the course of several months.

Scott Long, 56, faces a charge of aggravated abuse against an elderly person.

According to an arrest report, June Long, 84, was taken to Broward Health Medical Center with multiple lacerations and bruising throughout her body.

Police said June Long told detectives Tuesday that she had been punched repeatedly by her son in the face and throughout her head area.

Detectives said she was also bruised throughout her body, because she had been beaten by her son on multiple occasions for several months, which included Scott Long pulling her hair and twisting her neck.

Scott Long's wife, who did not want to be identified, said the allegations are false.

"We've been taking care of her. My husband changes her port-a-potty, he feeds her her meals by his hand. I mean, this is crazy. Crazy," the woman said.

According to Scott Long's wife, June Long is frail and often falls, causing the bruises.

"She fell two days in a row. She falls a lot. She has hospice here," the woman said. "We have hospice care. If we're abusing her, wouldn't hospice know this?"

Police said June Long's statements were corroborated by a child in the home who called for help after witnessing the latest altercation.

"It's very terrible when you have a vulnerable population or somebody that maybe can't help themselves and somebody victimizes them in any way, but especially with a physical abuse to the point that was just so severe that even the minor children in the home had observed it," Sgt. Carla Kmiotek said.

Scott Long is being held in jail without bond, while his mother remains in the hospital recovering from her injuries.
