Jayden Readon, 5, killed by car fleeing police in Boynton Beach

Lex Eugene tried to run from police after crash, authorities say

LANTANA, Fla. – A 5-year-old Miramar boy was killed Saturday when he was struck by a car driven by a man accused of fleeing from police.

Jayden Readon was walking with his younger brother and great grandparents to a nearby park Saturday afternoon when he was struck by a white Buick Enclave.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said the car was driven by Lex Eugene, who was fleeing Boynton Beach police after they tried to stop him for reckless driving.

The boy's body was thrown into a nearby field, and the car came to rest against a chain-link fence.

Sheriff's office spokeswoman Teri Barbera said Eugene, 20, got out of the car and tried to run before police caught up to him.

Judge Caroline Shepherd ordered Monday that Eugene be held without bond on a vehicular homicide charge.

Eugene faces additional charges, including drug possession and failing to stop at the scene of a crash.
