Children turnout to 6-year-old King's funeral in Opa-Locka

Ninja Turtles-themed funeral held at New Birth Baptist Church

OPA-LOCKA, Fla. – After a heartbreaking viewing on Friday, Santonio Carter and Monica Smith were at New Birth Baptist Church Cathedral of Faith Saturday to kiss their son for one last time.

Adults dressed as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles -- King Carter's favorite animated characters -- greeted children at the church.

The 6-year-old killed in a shooting in Northwest Miami-Dade was in a little white casket with his video game consoles. A boy walked up to the casket and placed a crown on him. When the casket closed, his father kneeled down in pain

"Today my King flies on to glory with the Lord," the father said on Facebook. "He has work to do."

There was traffic leading to the church, 2300 NW 135 St., in Opa-Locka, as hundreds turned out to say good bye to a boy, who died on his way to buy candy.

Members of his football team attended in their uniforms and lined up to give his parents gifts. Shortly after, King's father surprised relatives when he proposed to Smith, King's mom.

King, who wanted to be a police officer, died during a shooting related to a fight among teens on Facebook. His neighbor was the target.

Before police arrested three suspects, King's dad used Facebook to share his grief: "I have never been cut so deep in my life ... there has got to be justice."

On Friday, hundreds turned out to say good-bye to the Van. E. Blanton Elementary School first-grade student during a viewing at the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and footballs made out of flowers surrounded King's casket.

Miami-Dade County caught Tamar Teems, 16, Irwin Pressley, 17, and Leonard Adamas, 18, for their involvement in the Feb. 20 shooting at The Blue Lake Village apartment complex in Northwest Miami-Dade.

Leonard was injured and went to Jackson North Medical Center for treatment. Tamar was with him. Pressley was wearing a GPS ankle bracelet, because he was on probation for another crime, police said.

Miami-Dade County police were still looking for a black 1999 Lexus GS300 with tinted windows and a fourth suspect.

In December, a drive-by shooting in Miami-Dade killed 7-year-old Amiere Castro, while he was playing with toys he got for Christmas.
