Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said Amaya is accused of injuring a 4-year-old girl's lip while disciplining her Wednesday for misbehaving on the playground at St. Justin Martyr Catholic Church.
Herrin said an investigation determined that several children were misbehaving on the playground when Amaya, who was scolding them, pushed the girl's head down, causing the girl to hit her lip on a table.
An administrator at the day care reported the incident to authorities.
Archdiocese of Miami spokeswoman Mary Ross Agosta said the Department of Children and Families was also notified and is conducting an investigation.
Agosta said Amaya has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.
