Woman accused of stealing from Kohls while shopping with young daughter

More than $700 worth of jewelry stolen from Coconut Creek store, police say

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – A woman is facing charges after she stole more than $700 worth of jewelry Tuesday from a Kohls store in Coconut Creek while she was shopping with her 8-year-old daughter, police said.

According to an arrest report, Maria Quintero-Omeara, 44, was being watched by a loss prevention officer on surveillance cameras while she was shopping in the jewelry department at the store at 6950 State Road 7.

Police said Quintero-Omeara selected several pieces of jewelry and placed the items into the shopping cart. She then went to the junior's department, where she continued to select multiple pieces of jewelry, police said.

According to the report, Quintero-Omeara and her daughter entered a fitting room with the shopping cart and when they came out, some of the jewelry was no longer in the cart.

Police said Quintero-Omeara made a small purchase at the register that didn't include any jewelry and walked out of the store, where she was stopped by the loss prevention officer.

Police said the officer found jewelry on Quintero-Omeara and in her purse that totaled $710.66.

According to the report, Quintero-Omeara's daughter was hysterically crying when a police officer arrived and begged the officer not to take her mother to jail.

Quintero-Omeara faces charges of child neglect and grand theft.
