Man pulls knife on victim after caught burglarizing van in Lauderdale Lakes, deputies say

Convicted felon also accused of burglarizing 2 other vehicles in parking lot

LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. – A man is facing multiple charges after he pulled a knife out on the owner of a 2005 Chevrolet van that he was burglarizing in a parking lot in Lauderdale Lakes, authorities said.

According to an arrest report, the victim saw Roy Milton Barnes, 33, breaking the window of his van Wednesday from a third-floor apartment window in the 4200 block of Northwest 34th Street.

Broward sheriff's deputies said the victim confronted Barnes and held him in the parking lot until authorities arrived.

During that time, Barnes pulled out a 6-inch switch-blade knife from his pocket and assaulted the victim and another witness while he tried to run away, deputies said.

Both victims told deputies that they were in fear for their lives and saw a green screwdriver and black flashlight fall from Barnes while they struggled with him.

According to the report, authorities discovered that a 2001 black Jaguar and a 2001 Ford Excursion had also been burglarized in the parking lot.

Deputies said the front windows of both vehicles were shattered, and Barnes had stolen toothpaste, purses and a T-Mobile phone.

Barnes, who is on felony probation for a burglary conviction, was arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, being in possession of burglary tools, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and violating probation.
