NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Broward Sheriff's Office deputies are investigating a double shooting involving a mother and son at an apartment complex in North Lauderdale.
The shooting was reported early Monday morning on Cove Lake Road at the Lakeview Cove apartments.
BSO spokeswoman Joy Oglesby said Candice McKinney, 35, was found dead and her son, Kareem Barnett, 18, was found wounded. He was flown to an area hospital.
"I don't understand who would do this," Barnett's friend," Maleke Corniffe, told Local 10 News. "Who would hate him so much to put him in critical condition and take his mom's life? His mom just had a baby."
People who live at the complex said they heard nearly a half-dozen gunshots.
"It was like pow, pow, pow, pow," Nina Durart said.
"The investigators are trying to gather as much evidence as they can," Oglesby said. "They're talking to neighbors. They're talking to witnesses."
Neighbors told Local 10 News that the area is generally quiet and calm.
No arrests have been made, and a motive for the shooting is not immediately known.
Family members said McKinney and Barnett lived on the third floor. They said McKinney's other child, who is just a toddler, was not injured in the shooting, but was awakened by the gunfire.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
