According to police, Paneque's son was found inside a room at the San Juan Motel, 2390 SW Eighth St., while they were searching for Paneque's boyfriend, who is accused of stealing a motorcycle and then fleeing from police.
Police said an officer spotted Osniel Machado, 26, riding a stolen motorcycle about 4:30 a.m. at Southwest 24th Avenue, between Eighth and Ninth Streets in Little Havana, and tried to stop it.
Police said Machado fled from the officer and parked the motorcycle in front of the motel before running away.
Officers went door to door looking for Machado and said they questioned Paneque, who was known to be staying in one of the rooms. Police said they walked the woman to her room and asked to search it in case Machado was inside. Instead, they found the boy, who turned 2 years old that day, sleeping inside the room.
Drugs were found in the bathroom, on a nightstand and on the dresser drawers, police said.
Below is a list, provided by Miami police, of the drugs found inside the room:
- 42.2 grams of suspected cocaine powder
- 10.1 grams of suspected crack cocaine
- 12.6 grams of suspected marijuana
- 1.9 grams of suspected Xanex
- $428.50 in U.S. currency
Paneque was arrested on charges of child neglect and possession of narcotics.
The boy is now in the custody of the Department of Children and Families. DCF spokeswoman Paige Patterson said the department does not have a previous history involving the child.
A shelter hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday afternoon to determine where the boy will stay.
Police said Machado is Paneque's boyfriend, but is not the father of the boy.
Anyone with information about Machado's whereabouts is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
